Molestation on trains rise to all time high in Tokyo

Record 2,201 cases of molestation on trains reported in Tokyo last year

A record 2,201 cases of women molested on trains were reported in Tokyo last year, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said.

However, MPD officials said that they believe this is just the tip of iceberg, noting that numerous victims of such crimes choose not to file criminal complaints against their molesters.

Among the 2,201 cases, the MPD arrested, or sent investigation reports to prosecutors, on 1,886 suspects aged 14 to 80. Those in their 30s, some 37 percent, accounted for the largest number of suspects. About 30 percent of the victims were high school girls.
I think the increase in mainly due in the more frequent reporting of molestations, rather than a real increase in cases. As they say, it is just the tip of the iceberg, as many women feel too embarassed to report it to the police.

You need to consider carefully the subtle difference between the first line of the article: "A record 2,201 cases of women molested on trains were reported in Tokyo last year, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said." and the subject of your post: "Molestation on trains rise to all time high in Tokyo".

They're not necessarily the same thing.

I know, but that's just journalistic style to catch the readers' attention.

It's definitely just the tip of the iceberg... I think there are thousands and thousands of women getting molested each year who never ever tell anyone. I would never tell the police or something, I'd be ashamed and think it wasn't such a big deal.
Funny though that the numbers have increased. I thought there had been a law passed out recently against molestation (sp?) (groping?) Thought those sick men would stop sometime.....

I read somewhere, that the "average" man who molests in the Japanese subwaytrain is about 35-50 years old. These men are no teenagers! But they must have some deeply unsatisfied sexual desires which they haven't been able to do something about.
Molesting isn't that common in the US or anywhere else, is it?
In Sweden, I've never heard of it ever.

instead of molesting other women, they should invest more time in their own wives who need attention !

many Japanese are afraid to speak up

however, i think that in the US, molestors would get slapped and kicked in the balls

They don't only have unsatisfied sexual desires, but also twisted mind, that gets somehow tamed by threatning or frightning the weaks with a force. It should be taken more seriously, in Japan this molestation on trains seems to be becoming such a common incident that the victims are neglected.

And yes it happens often in the U.S., but they have different kinds of sex crime than Japan.

I think that molestation is a strong word to use (even if by definition it is correct). Many people classify molestation as more of a violent sexual assault just short of rape. What happens on these trains is more of a groping and in many cases is quite unavoidable due to the tight quarters. I do not condone anyone being grapped/touched when it is not wanted, but I feel that molestation is much too strong of a word for what is actually happening!

CC1 - you might be right. We should call it groping. But it's still strange, seems soo common in Japan, but never happens in Sweden. I don't think swedish men would dare to grope a woman on the train or something, she and everyone present would kick his ***. haha.

But I've also heard that some teenager-girls find it a compliment to get "groped" on the subwaytrain - they think they are found attractive and think it's positive?

    Woah boy do I disagree.
Even on a crowded train its easy too know the differences between accidental brushing and outright fondling.
I know a girl who was 'groped'. It sounded like it was barely short of outright finger based penetration.
She was messed up for at least a week over it, but never complained because she said the train was so busy and the staff dont care.
A student of mine worked at Shinjuku station and told me of a time when a schoolgirl was bought crying into an office with a mans semen on her skirt and leg. Does that sound like the result of 'accidental busy train touching'?
To me both these cases are sexual assault, are molestation.

A foreign friend of mine busted another man jacking himself on the train while looking up two high schoolers skirts.

Theres also the point that train groping has become fetishised in Japan. Porn movies are built around girls getting groped on the train, clubs of like mined men are formed, whole train carriages must be women only, message boards start discussing ways too grope women and some brothels are designed to look like train carriages. Things like this don't exists in a vacuum. Not at all. They only start when their is a market for them, or in the case of the womens only carriages a need for them.

Groping is a big problem in Japan and when it happened to my gf (she was the girl mentioned in the first story) I was angry. I would have started the very first man that looked suspicious on the next train I was on.

Men seem to do it because they can. Because it gives them a bit of power, something they seem to lack elsewhere in their lives. Because other people try to say its not that bad or that the terms are too strong, its likely just an accident. Thats the fodder these gropers use to justify and get away with their depraved actions.

I like one method I heard for dealing with them. If a girl feels someone touching her badly on the train, she stabs them with a big needle, then cries 'Chikan'. If the person denies doing it she can ask why he is bleeding.

    Gold.

WHoA - I never heard of such bad cases of molestation - I never thought the men actually masturbating (sp?) on the train! In these cases, it really should be called molestation!

As you are free to! Obviously I don't think that every incident is accidental, but I also don't believe that everything that is reported is as bad as it is made out to be!

Never imagined it would be like that. That's just short of you know what.... Anyway, I think the girls' sailor skirt uniforms are partly to blame also. The attire might provoke some of the lesser willed men to let their hands wander off.

Ya, but it was a male idea in the first place to create this sex-craze around the sailor uniforms --- people (men) thought the schooluniformes were hot, and porn such as hentai or pornvideos featuring sailor suits were released.
Soon seen as something "new" and "trendy", young girls who wanted to be appreciated or cool shortened their skirts to miniskirts, thus creating an even bigger fetisch around the subject. I mean, I don't think the teachers developing these uniforms, or the little students wearing them thought " Let's provoke buisnessmen and force them into perversion and molestation! " --- ---- I might be wrong?

It has a perverse effect indeed. If memory serves right, I think the current uniforms were taken from the time the Japanese were under American rule. They patterned the uniforms after the US Navy.

I second that ! Try coming back from Shibuya on a Saturday night ,that's when those kinda guys flock .

But even though at the time of Tokyo's rush hour you are crushed and smashed from all directions. There is not any reason why it wouldn't be possible for someone to avoid touching you in an insulting way. The train design itself forces everyone to almost stand with their "hands up where I can see 'em!"

I get kicked in my behind very oftenly , but usually by old women and school girl's bags ..

Yeah, I heard it was something like that.

as not to say.. I think schooluniforms ARE sexy, I mean, I think they're kawaii (and I'm a girl)... but that's because we've "grown up" with it being a sort of sex-symbol, or fetisch...

Moaha-ha, when I ride the subwaytrain in Tokyo, I'll keep my hands in low level... I'm verrrry fond of japanese men. *fufufu*
No, seriously, it might not be something to joke about.. molesting isn't good.
