This flag is based on China. Sun Yat-sen added the "Red Earth" to the flag to signify the blood of the revolutionaries who sacrificed themselves in order to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and create the ROC. Together, the three colors of flag correspond to the Three Principles of the People: White represents the people's livelihood, Blue represents democracy, and Red represents nationalism. In the "Blue Sky with a White Sun" flag of Lu Hao-tung, the twelve rays of the white Sun symbolize the twelve months and the twelve traditional Chinese hours (時辰, sh兤h駭), each of which corresponds to two modern hours (小時, xiǎosh・ literally: "little sh・quot;).

The other flag that the CPC uses is based communism. It uses the typical all red communists and socialists use. It has four small stars with one big star to symbolize the supreme power of the communist party. Nothing linked to China.

No, this flag died with ROC in 1949. A new China should use a happier flag, not some flag with bloody and gruesome history.

This idea is much easier said than done, because the flag carries such strong political messages.

I don't think it would be politically feasible to do so unless the Taiwanese government were to somehow wrestle control from Beijing. Not very likely, given recent trends.

If China ever does become a democratic country, I think it would be in more people's interest to to come up with an entirely new flag, rather than adopt the R.O.C.'s flag.

Adopting a new flag may also be an alternative to the current commie flag. However as far as tradition goes this was the original flag of China when the Chinese Empire fell. It was perfected until 1928. So if we go by tradition then the new Chinese democratic republic should adopt this flag.
No flag I know is without blood. It's all about tradition.

I'm definitely in the "entirely new flag" camp. If China wishes to move forward, it needs to put the past behind it.

I dunno, its a good flag, being the first flag of a non imperial china, therefor the flag of the first ligitimate government of china,, but theres too much red for my personal taste to be honest, but the chinese love red they do, apparently.

Made from scratch, as you see, it doesnt carry any defeated nationalistic overtones, the blue represents democracy, the red represents china and the weight of history behind it, the little yellow star over beijing is just that but i guess it has, in conjunction to the red of china, a small nod to china's communist past, the white star represents the future hopes and prosperities of the chinese people, and the white around the simplistic map of china represents purity of intention and china's new policy of peace-making with its neighbours, and recognising its new responsibility as a regional and world power to protect the values of human rights for the people of asia.

No more worries then?.

Interesting idea on the flag nurizeko..however I don't think China's geographic area will be the same if there's ever going to be a democratically elected government. Tibet and XinJian (which make up of a big chunk of China) will be gone and so does the Manchu area in the Northeast. Inner Mongolia might join Mongolia and southern states strong in minorities might declare independence. (hell even HK might want to have their own country, why not)

While it's an interesting idea, as a graphic designer I can't help but interject a bit of constructive criticism :)

an important element of flags is a relation of all the parts to a whole. Notice on the taiwanese flag that the blue field in the upper left quadrant is precisely one quarter of the whole. Furthermore, the elements that comprise the sun are proportional to the area surrounding the graphic.

nurizeko, on your flag, the area that contains the map of china is quite a bit larger than a fraction of the whole flag, which makes the blue field feel weighted unevenly.

The white star is also disproportionately large, which gives it more visual importance than the map of China, which is much more intricate and detailed (elements that would be lost in smaller reproductions).

Lastly, having the field behind the map of China as white makes it interact with the white star, and has no relationship to the map itself, other than to act as a container for it. The yellow star is promptly lost, and seems to have no significance or relationship to the larger white star.

Not that it's a bad idea, but the elements all need to have some sort of relation to each other, and to the frame of reference of the flag itself.

But I have to agree with gaijin. The flag is great and highly creative but it seems a bit too elaborate and uneven. Plus no other country has a map on their flag and it would be a bit odd for China to have one.

well, Antartica, Cyprus, and the United Nations all have map elements on their flags, but the important thing is that those elements are centered on the flag and hold the highest visual importance; if one were to make a flag using an outline of the country's political borders, no other element on the flag should try to compete with it.

The united korean flag has a simplistic representation of korea on it.
Theres no law forbidding the map of a country on a flag, infact i think its a good thing to have.
A simplistic map of a country as their flag makes more sense then a bunch of abstract shapes and forms.
