Just wondering what the forum population's average height is...

I am 1m90

kirei_na_me
Apr 30, 2004, 21:51
Well, I thought in centimeters I was 165, but that only comes out to 5'4" (a little over). I'm a little over 5'5", so I'm thinking I would be more like 168 cm. This foot/inch thing really irritates me! Why can't we be like the rest of the world and use the Metric system? Anyway...

My husband is 165 cm and he's shorter than me by about an inch, maybe a tad more than an inch. Sometimes, I wish I could wear my 3.5/4 inch heels and still be shorther than the person I'm with...

Back in the 1970s, Randy Newman had a song called "Short People".

It was pretty funny, but also touching.

Yes, people in the medical field and other science fields use the metric system, but generally, it's not taught in our school systems. At least, it's not taught anywhere around here. Maybe they spend 10 minutes on it one year and that's all. I think it's a real handicap, because everybody else in the world uses it, and yes, I also feel it is more accurate.

jeisan
May 1, 2004, 20:48
nah, its still not taught in school. we learn what it is and why its better but thats about it. so most of the general public has no idea how high 171cm is, or their own weight in kg. though our cars have both mph and km/h on the speedometer.
i've been trying to learn metric units for awhile now. i can for the most part freely convert speed, distance, weight, height and temperature between the two. but most of it is still relative to me, as im not quite sure what the metric measurement is until its converted into american units.

Mayura
May 2, 2004, 00:29

Yes, I have always known that 'chibi' meant that, and that it's not nice to refer to someone else as that. I just think Gaki is a good looking guy, therefore, 'chibi' must not mean 'runt', 'little one', but something else...

Size, yes. But when a guy says "I'm long !", he means his male organ.

kirei_na_me
May 11, 2004, 05:25
'Long'(when not referring to organs) is usually used when you're talking about babies, before they are able to walk. Then later, when kids begin to walk and get older, then starts the however many feet/cm 'tall'. At least, that's what I've observed...

5'3" guy to make Canadian high school basketball team should not be a very big problem,I have seen some

a few guys in the NBA

Muggsy Bogues, 5'3"
Earl Boykins, 5'5" and he is damn good
plus Spud Webb, who is 5'7" , he was the Slam Dunk champ in 1986

Muggsy Bogues and Earl Boykins can't dunk
but they are quick,especially Boykins

Spud Webb, who is 5'7",was a Slam Dunk champion
most people who stands at 5'7" can't dunk, some can't even touch the rim
he defeated all those other guys who are 6 foot something to get the champion
so go figure...

the fact is that, the shorter you are,the more skills are required for you to make into the NBA.

you are kidding...right?.....

yup, Lisa Leslie dunked in WNBA,she is the first to dunk in a WNBA game
Candice Parker,Michelle Snow,Charlotte Smith dunked in college
actually only a few women dunked in WNBA and college
but they are above 6 foot 3 so they are supposed to be able to dunk in practice, but in actual games thats another thing.

the difference of height

Earl Boykins 5'5
Yao Ming 7'4

yes,the shorter a player is,the more skills required for him to make into the NBA,
there are not many 7 footers,so guys who are above 7' have higher chance

there are many people who are around 5'6 to 6' on the streets
you have to be better than all those people, and be good enough to beat guys who are above 6'
for those who are under 6' ,or even around 5'5" and have a starting spot in the NBA
they are really really good ballers

Yuta Tabuse tried out for the Mavericks, assistant coach Donnie Nelson quite liked him but didn't select him, then he tried out for the Nuggets but was cut too,I guess that because they already had Earl Boykins

But we still have Ichiro! He's only about 5'9" and 170 lbs. but a great athlete role model for Oriental kids. I wish there were players like him when I was growing up. Bruce Lee appeared on the scene when I was 11 but he was in the movies and not as a real competitive fighter. He was 5'7" and 150 lbs.

That's why I like Kazushi Sakuraba so much. He looks like a friendly, nice, skinny Japanese guy but has fought and beaten four Gracie Brazilian Jujutsu fighters in real competition.

Good choice. Are you wearing seaweed today?

HAH! I decided to be daring and went without seaweed today.

Umeboshi flavored gum? That sounds very interesting. :souka:

I live in Medford, Oregon myself. Ashland is a very beautiful place - I was there just a couple of days ago. It's great during the summer.
Oregon's really a nice place to live, I just can't find a lot of the things here that I might in bigger cities. (which there are few of here)
And Portland's just too far away to visit often.
I long to visit Powels (or whatever the bookstore's called). I've never had the chance when I was actually in the area. :okashii:

honestly I hate this height for these reasons:

1.height is important for playing basketball, especially if you wanna get into some leagues, unless you are so good like Earl Boykins,Muggsy Bogues,Spud Webb

2.can't play the position that I wanted, since when I started playing basketball I wanted to play Power Forward, but now due to my height I play Guards when playing with bigger guys [6 ft +]

3.common to see white girls taller than me

well it is genetic..since my parents are short...gotta live with it~

A couple of things. While I don't doubt that the listed difference in height is accurate, the picture capitalizes on an optical illusion which makes the already significant height difference seem even more dramatic. Here, look again:

Earl Boykins 5'5
Yao Ming 7'4
http://www.nba.com/media/warriors/mar2_earl_yao.jpg

Note Ming's feet, which appear to be "lower" than Boykins's. He's clearly standing in the foreground, perhaps several meters from Boykins. To get a better idea of how they would look standing next to each other, visualize twice the vertical difference between the base of Ming's and Boykins's respective feet. Now subtract that from Ming's height.

(Ming will still be considerably taller than Boykins, of course! But thinking about it like this might help overcome the exaggerated impression we're given from the picture.)

Also, with regards to the use of the metric system (SI) in US schools, the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) has long recommended that all state and county math curricula place an emphasis on teaching SI alongside the English Standard (ES) system in the early grades (see a very broad overview of the suggested standards here (http://standards.nctm.org/document/appendix/meas.htm)).

But, given that the US still uses ES for many business applications (e.g. liquid volume of beverages, although SI units are also listed), in much of the media and sports (e.g. "10-yard line"), and in day-to-day practice (e.g. I'm 5' 10" tall), I don't think that much more than the basic structure of IS sticks in kids' minds, at best.

However SI is used extensively in many high school and college courses (at least in the sciences and mathematics), though we often continue to use ES in those courses, as well. For example, although I mostly used SI, I once had to answer a question in Differential Equations about "mass" using ES. I didn't even know what the units were for measuring mass in ES! I had to look it up (it's "slugs," by the way).

I agree that it would be much simpler to do away with ES and exclusively use SI. But that seems to be taking us a very long time... :okashii:

Dan

I agree completely, the metric system is much easier to use and you can use common sense to figure stuff out because its based on tens, like kilometer -- kilo=1000 so 1000 meters which is much easier than memorizing that there are 5280 feet in a mile. Its too bad the change is taking such a logn time...

We are taller in the morning because the disks of our spine rest during the night. For various reasons, astronauts are taller up to 2 inches in space (search Google...).

Earlier Frank D. White said he was getting smaller with age. He should stretch his spine. It works, and eliminates all back problems! http://www.geocities.com/ambkk/HangUps.html

Dutch, Worldfs Tallest People, Just Keep Growing
Reuters, Toronto Star, Jul. 23

The Dutch, already the tallest people on the planet, are still growing. Data collected over the last seven years showed increasing demand for larger clothing sizes in the Netherlands, where the average man is about 185 centimetres (6-foot-1) tall. The Dutch are nearly 10 centimetres taller on average than the British and Americans, and almost 15 centimetres taller than they were four decades ago.

Other studies also rank the Dutch as the tallest people on the planet\and suggest they could grow another 10 entimetres in the next few decades.

Researchers put it down to affluence, a diet rich in dairy products, and good hygiene and health care. But junk food may be limiting the health advantages that wealth has brought. Nearly half of the population is overweight.

Read the rest of this story here (http://www.amren.com/mtnews/archives/2004/07/dutch_worldas_t.php#) .

so yeah when you see the avarage dutch is around 185 cm, and i am just 171... i am pretty small... sometimes it is funny, but i got many jokes about it.. but yeah when i say my wife is even smaller then me they laugh..

Noticed the last post on this thread was in November of last year... but I think it's fun, so perhaps this post will help getting some attention :)

As for my height, I'm 1.82m, which makes me rather tall for a girl I guess, but I live in the Netherlands, so there's still quite some people here who are taller than I am (luckily).

Though it might be a bit strange when I go to Japan next year! Heard a guy in one of the senior years was stalked by hordes of Japanese girls who wanted to take his picture! But he's over 2m, so I guess he stands out a bit more :)

People are going to notice you BIG time. My sister is as tall as you are and when she was here people "noticed" her right away. There aren't too many Japanese females over 180cm tall.

Yeah I guess that's very true. Have never even met a Japanese guy who was taller than I am :) But that being '"noticed" ... can I just expect people pointing at me or will I be stalked by hordes of Japanese with cameras as well? :S

so yeah when you see the avarage dutch is around 185 cm, and i am just 171...I know!! And I am 184 cm, 1 cm short of average.. Argh!!
I used to be the shortest kid in class until the end of middle school though. Being bullied and all, being called "short" or "small" is the one thing I can't stand even today. :relief:

I'm 5'4 and actually felt short in Japan because all the ladies were tall with their high heeled shoes.
