Taipei, Taiwan - A landmark meeting Saturday between Taiwan's vice president-elect and China's president Hu Jintao has raised hopes for the first cross-strait talks in a decade. But analysts say many pitfalls lie ahead – and any breakthrough likely to be economic, not political.

Through negotiation,Taiwan anticipates 1 million mainland Chinese tourists a year and other " win-win" economic engagments with China.I must say Taiwan people are very much influenced by US,“ It’s the economy, stupid. ” as they voted KMT back in power this past March 22,2008.

Just an update on latest diplomatic development on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

The newly-elected Ma administration's goal is to facilitate " win-win " negotiations to lessen political tensions.

BEIJING - Taiwan and China have agreed to set up permanent offices in each other's territory for the first time in nearly six decades of hostility, one of the biggest steps the political rivals have taken to build mutual trust.

* As part of Mainland China's National Expressway Plan a tunnel, or possibly a bridge, was proposed in 2005 to link the cities of Fuzhou, Fujian and Taipei in Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait. If such an extreme construction would ever be built, it would by far exceed the length of any man-made tunnel in the world today. Engineers in Beijing state that a tunnel is technically feasible.

Historic China-Taiwan Weekend Flights Begin

By Reuters | 03 Jul 2008 | 09:25 PM ET

Historic flights between Taiwan and China began taking off on Friday, ushering in the first wave of what could become millions of Chinese visitors to the island as relations warm between the long-time rivals.

The first of the flights, a China Southern Airlines plane, departed from Guangzhou in southern China early in the morning, the mainland's Xinhua news agency reported.

"Opening Taiwan to mainland China tourists is an important policy of the current government," Taiwan Premier Liu Chao-shiuan said in a statement on Thursday. "The advantages of mainland tourist visits to Taiwan are not only stimulus for related industries, job opportunities for citizens and other tangible interests," he said.

"It's also for mutual peace, a deepening of exchanges, elevating our international image and other non-tangible points."

Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou, who took office in May on pledges to revitalize the island's economy with closer trade and transit ties to China, has estimated that 50 million Chinese want to visit hard-to-reach Taiwan.

I believe even non-Chinese are entitled to discuss the relationship between Taiwan and China. Besides, when the merger of the two countries, oh I'm sorry, the two parts of China takes place, the neighboring countries are affected as the region's geopolitical power balance shifts.
