View Full Version : Body hair

I don't know how true it is' but I have heard and read several things about the Japanese and their obsession with body hair. Do they have an obsession with it and is it seen as a good thing or a bad thing? The reason I ask is that I am fairly hirsute (Okay, I'm a wookie) and would like to know the Japanese attitude to it.

Well, there is one situation that I was in that sums this subject up for me.

When one of my Japanese female friends was pregnant, I introduced her to my OB/GYN's. When my husband found out she was going to see them, he said, "She will not like Dr. So-and-So because he has too much hair on his arms." I was like... :souka: I didn't know how to respond to that. He said she might be "scared" of him. Later, she did tell me that she didn't like him as much as the other doctor, because he had "too much hair" and that it made him seem like a "rough man". Whatever. He was/is my favorite.

Along the way, I've heard several other comments regarding body hair. I think it's just what they're used to. Japanese people generally don't have much body hair. The men's chests and backs are relatively bare and the hair on their arms and legs is not very abundant. My husband has no hair at all on his back that you can see, on his chest he has what seems like just a few hairs, and the hair on his legs cuts off not far above the knee.

Maybe they see a lot of body hair as being too primate-like. Maybe they think those with a lot of hair have not evolved enough... :p

I would echo some of kirei's ideas, but there are some exceptions. I'm only somewhat hairy on my chest and stomach (nowhere else thanks <_<), but none of the Japanese women i've known hated it and most even grew to like it. But it was different from what they had been used to.

One thing that I do find somewhat hypocritical is that I have never known a Japanese woman that has shaved or even trimmed her genital area. Not to open up a new can of worms here, but to my taste this is somewhat revolting. If there is a lot of hair down there, it is definitely worse than some guy that has ape-like growth on his back and shoulders. And everytime I broached this subject, they would be genuinely surprised and say that they had never known anyone that did this.

So I guess this cultural difference cuts both ways.

Sounds like my Chinese friends. They also think it's kind of dirty, esp. facial hair.

Then again, some of their most famous sumo wrestlers are quite hairy. Yet they seem very popular. Shouldn't this help Japanese to get used somewhat to the idea of hairy backs? Or is it that they see sumo wrestlers as Romans saw many of their gladiators: great fighters, but still barbarians? :souka:

Revolting? It's only natural. To me it's more revolting when girls are shaved down there. Pre-puberty looks as a trend? :okashii:

So I guess this cultural difference cuts both ways. Are you saying that it is considered not only tolerable or acceptable, but expected of women / men to shave / wax pull / remove by lazer surgery hair in said area(s) in the US ? To the degree that couples can/do ask these modifications of each other ? :auch:   :silly:
Pre-puberty looks as a trend?Could this be the US version of kawaii culture among sexually active adults ? :clueless:

Except that I would disagree that it looks pre-pubescent. It's really reaching to equate the two concepts. It looks like an adult that has used scissors or a razor.

And yes, it would not be rude for someone to request such a thing, especially if it is causing physical pain for the other person. Any sort of laser procedure seems a bit extreme though.

I do consider myself fortunate in the fact I have dark red hair. Used to be quite ginger when I was younger, but I digress. Having my colour hair means that it is fair and on my arms and legs you can't really tell how hairy I am. I know people who have dark hair and have gorilla arms, so in some ways I am fortunate. (Prepared to fend off the gorilla arm brigade)

straight pubic hair

Now, THAT sounds odd. Personally, I can't stand hair on the body other than what comes out the scalp, and groomed eyebrows (no unibrows, please!). Needless to say, it makes things more convenient in the bedroom--or whatever other room you happen to be in at the time--in spite of how much of a pain it is to get that way.

Being discriminated by Japanese women bad?! How about American women! I get made fun of because I'm hairy.:( Luckly I don't have any hair on the back side of my body, but I have a very hairy front side. I'm even afraid to take my shirt off. Hell I like wearing long sleeves over short sleeves because of it. I hate my hairy body.:( (except the hair on my head, I love it)

It is first and foremost about tactile sensation, and secondly about odor/taste. Hair burns are quite unpleasant. I understand perfectly, but does it really hurt that much ? The whole curly structure is supposed to reduce undue friction, acting as a mechanical lubricant if you will. So the mystery remains. The other thing is, why would it burn unless someone intentionally sets it on fire ? :D

I've been with two Japanese women and both were fascinated (in a very positive way) by my abundant chest hair. They both mentioned that they weren't too fond of Japanese guys due to their lack of body hair. With one, when she complemented me, I just couldn't resist the line Sean Connery used in You Only Live Twice, "Japanese proverb say, Bird don't build nest in bare tree."

As for the "lower regions," (ahem) one gal was shaved smooth and the other was shaved but had about a week's worth of growth. A gal a friend was with had a racing stripe. So it seems the current "fashion" of shaving is reaching Japan to some degree.

I've seen younger women in onsens and sentos seemingly wrapped up in the image as well, although I wonder with some of them thin enough for their ribs to show through if it isn't a thinning the hard way, via a starvation diet than razor? :okashii:

To be completely honest I understand for several different reasons why women shave "down there", but it always seems to weird me out. I mean every woman that I've seen shaving to be smooth just plain bothers me. It's like women want to get back to that pre-puberty look. No arm hair, leg hair, ahem "down there" hair, etc. It's just plain bothersome. *shudders* However, too much hair can be a problem too. All natural people tend to freak me out too. I mean women who don't shave at all anywhere. *shudders* For me you can't have too much hair, but you can't have to little either. (No leg hair, no arm hair, but some "ahem" hair.) BTW how did we get to this point anyway with the topic? :souka:

Well body hair has a function you know...without u get smelly..as hair has the function to absorb nasty, funky smells so u won't smell like a can of tunafish that's stuck in the fridge for 2 weeks !!!

Body hair is scary... at least too much of it. Hairy backs and back sides are... I'm fascinated by japanese men and how they usually aren't that hairy. It's nice, I think.

Armpits should definitely be shaved when it comes to women. For men, I don't mind, but shaved armpits look nice on both sexes. But; is it common for men to shave their armpits, I don't know too many who does...? :?

As for shaving down there...hair should be trimmed, but not completely gone! No hair at all can look scary.

What's even scarier is that some men also shave "down below!" I can't for the life of me conceive doing that. That would seem to be a rough going as shaving the surface of the moon!

I trim there regularly with scissors. It's just part of normal hygiene for me. Shaving is not recommended as the hair can become *****ly. I also trim underarms with scissors as it really does help to minimize odors.

To Mycernius: From my experience, a majority of Japanese women do not like much hair on a guy. This includes facial hair also, which is why I shaved my moustache back in the day. I did date one J-woman though that said she really liked hairy men, especially men with hairy chests. She said it felt so soft and cuddly when she rubbed her face on a hairy guys chest. I guess that, as I didn't have hardly any hair, we only dated twice.

You haven't met my Japanese wife!

I also find it quite revolting. I was told by a Japanese woman that only prostitutes and other "unsavory" women shaved down there. She said that "good girls" didn't do that and most Japanese men would not think highly of a shaved woman. I was really surprised that most Japanese women had really thick bushes. Even today, from some of the X-clips I have glanced at on line that most still have the bush. Uggh! Even men I have glanced at in the onsen or public bath seemed to not even trim at all.

I couldn't agree with you more. Also makes the skin more sensitive :-)

Probably more information than you need, or want to know, but here goes. Both me and the wife are as clean and smooth down there as the day we were born! You wouldn't believe how sensitive the skin can become there! It's not rough at all. First use scissors to trim as close to the skin as possible. Then just use your razor. It may seem uncomfortable at first and will probably itch the first few days and a few bumps may develop, but if you do it at least once a week you won't even notice it. After a while, when the hair begins to grow back it will not even feel rough or stubbly. It will become very soft even for as short as it is. As for the "sack" area, the skin should be tight and a shaving razor (after trimming first!) will do the job quite smoothly. No nicks or cuts. The wife does it twice a week. She said it itched at first, but that soon passed. After more than 10 years of being "clean" she, and I for that matter, find it very uncomfortable to have hair in that area. However, before returning to Japan we do let it grow for 2-3 weeks beforehand so we won't look too weird at an onsen.

Pornmovies are full with trimmed guys...ermm...I just know ok
Yes and the women are ALL smooth also these days.

I don't agree. I've never seen a guy trimmed before, and I can't imagine such sick practice.
By "sick" do you mean mentally ill or perverted or disgusting? It works for us and we both find it very erotic and stimulating, and like I mentioned, it is oh so sensitive to the touch. After more than ten years of practicing it, it has become normal for us. Try it, you just may discover a new sensual experience!

that, my fellow japanophiles, is the sound of a "mkay..." thread finally derailing like a bulletrain hitting a titanium pebble on the track and flying into low orbit.

and as ive said before, i wouldnt really enjoy the sight of a human gorilla but saying that when your with a woman, there are seriously other concerns then a few pubic hairs. =P

My hair stays, definitely. But then again, I don't have any "embaressing" hair growth or anything, except hairy earstips. :embarasse Plus, save chest, face, head (which have gone from white to darker over the last 10 years or so) and "the" area, my hair is white. So basically, for the sake of eyes of others, you won't see me running around the beaches summertime.

:D

Well, they do sometimes have bars close to the beach.. But that would be the nearest to a beach I *might* go. Remember - beer is good for the hair.

I don't frequent beaches much, although I like the sea. I'm pale and burn easily, so I'm not really a sun person fullstop. Now come to my lair and let my refresh myself on your blood. :D

Maybe it has been my immersion in the Japanese rock culture that has made me obsessed with being completely clean of body hair ...

I also think it just looks and FEELS a lot nicer, for my girlfriend and myself ... nobody wants to touch something really hairy! And the touch feels nice against bare skin.

My cats are covered in hair, but I don't object to fussing them.
Great, all I need now is 'Do not fuss the wookie' sign. No wonder Chewbacca was bad tempered :okashii:

Yes, the Jrockers are certainly not hairy...

That's not entirely true - Cats and dogs are better with hair (fur). I don't like the naked hairless cats at all...

hello, this is my first post on this site and what a thread to post in...I guess this is the best way to get to know me...hehe

Anyway, I'm usually really attracted to East-Asian looking females, but as I read this thread I see my chances with J-female go down and down...
Like most Persian men, I'm really really hairy, heavy eyebrows, loads of body haid (everywhere) and I hate removing my body hair (except for some places, because of hygiene). So what you guys are saying is that my chances of being with a J-female is as good as Zer0? =(

I wouldn't really say that Master Geek. As with any country and culture it's you as a person that is most improtant; your personality and whether you click with your partner or not regardless of body hair, scars, etc.

J-Women may say that they don't like body hair, but if they end up falling in love with you I doubt it would really matter at all. If that were the case, no man with body hair would ever be married to a J-woman and everyone would probably be walking around bald to prove they don't have any!

Your chances are as good as anyone else's. Good luck!

body hair is not sexy in terms of letting people look young. recently, i removed the hairs around my tits, now i feel years younger, they look good.

i have taken picture! but, they were too offensive, and i have deleted them again. it was a good idea to remove the hairs, they were looking sooo ugly.

This is too funny. i must say I'm not really attracted to a lot of body hair, but it certainly doesn't disgust me, i mean it's natural, we all have it, or had it...if someone's got personality then body hair just doesn't seem to matter that much, whether they're a wookie or smooth as baby's butt. I will say though, that guys who wax aren't really my thing, it's just weird to me for some reason, a little too unnatural. Speaking as a girl i don't think a guy should ever be less hairy than I am, no way! I'm all for a good trim though. Wow, ok, i've said way more than i thought i would on this subject, see ya!! :bluush:

A putting green is nice...
I don't care for the rough but have played through more than a few times...

Straight pubes? I dated a j-girl with that style.
Freaked me out at first, I thought it was a tribble. Ha ha

As far as men go I am fairly hairy and have yet to get a complaint.
(stop here, married now ha ha)

Personally I really dislike back hair, especially mine.
I've noticed the hair on my head is making the long slow migration to my ankles... Horrible I tell you.

I do find it very interesting that the nieces and nephews like to stroke my arm hair.

My girlfiend has zero body hair.
Where most of my white girlfriends in the past have had to shave certain areas my currect girl literally plucks the few hairs with tweezers.
No complaints from me.
Smooth is the move (lol)

Don't take it to heart, Doc. There are a lot of women who like hairy men.

I used to think I liked (nearly)hairless men until I met this one guy that changed things. He was very hairy, but believe me, I saw way beyond all of that... ;-)

And not to forget there's people craving after more body hair to the point of buying and attaching wigs to affect the effect of body hair. I used to wish for more hair on my legs, but resigned to be content with what I've got. It helps to keep a healthy sense of gratitude for nature and talent for all their shortcomings.

not a wise decision, once you do it you`ll have to shave every day (believe me or not, hair looks better than bristles) And why should you care about what females prefer? ;o)
i don`t personally fit modern female standarts about appearance. But damn, this is genetics, enough of shaving legs. And if i don`t suit anyone in my natural way, then that`s their problem, not mine
