View Full Version : Are you a racist ? (test yourself)

Take this quick test (http://www.okcupid.com/results/the-how-racist-are-you-test1/) and vote at the poll. It appeared that I am balanced.

I got 57% and "you are generally NOT race-minded." I thought the questions were a bit too general, though. I also felt that I don't need a test to tell me what I think of other races. Still, it was an interesting experiment.

[Edit] The poll choices are a bit misleading. For instance, my score was "Tolerant: You scored 34!" but my "racistpoints" score was 57%, and that was the one that I chose when voting. Which did you mean?

"You are generally NOT race-minded, there may be a thing or two that you see as a race issue, but mostly, you are a very tolerant person!"

but this test is aimed at US citizen (Mexican immigrants or European immigrants?)
and what is "NAACP"?

"Anti-racist: You scored 18! :Congratulations, you are a very tolerant and muticultered person! No one could ever accuse you of being a racist! : higher than 42% on racistpoints."
What's the difference between tolerant & anti-racist ? The test didn't give any objective frame of reference, and I can hardly take it seriously. Especially the questions about Affirmative Action, NAACP/NAACW, and Jewish talentedness, and skin color-math ability correlation. Such obvious questions not only jeopodize the reliability, but can also perpetuate genuine racism by offering certain emergency exits of self deception. Highly damaging test, so please don't trust what it says !

Yeah I think it could be used to refer to anyone who wasn't white. I think its actually considered rude now to use in modern parlance? I suppose that depends on where you are from, I have heard elderly black men/women refer to themselves as "colored people" without a hint of irony.

I think its mostly a generational change in preferance?

Hmm, come to think of it, Africian-American could be kind of insulting to some people. We don't usually call say, a Polish or German person a "European-American" do we? How come in "P.C." terminology white people are refered to by their former individual ethnicity and not their continental one, while black people are all refered to by their continental one and not their regional one. How come we don't call people like, Sudanese-American or Congolese-American, et cetera?

Is an arab egyptian an african-american? I mean, Egypt is right there on the continent :-)

Would Charlize Theron be an africian american (assuming she had american citizenship)? She was born and raised in south africa ><

Confusing huh??

Yeah, I guess. Very white people blush easily and get easily sunburned or suntanned. Easy to get some colours. :p

When I was reading the ethnic composition of South Africa on Wikipedia, they mentioned that there were Black, White and Coloured people. This is even more confusing. Of course they meant those of Indian origin. However, I thought that "coloured" was a politically correct term that originated in the US and mostly meant Black. :?

Racism is always a tricky issue.
I've always considered myself very open-minded regarding this subject.
I often had arguments with my family when I was younger - occasionally relating to my choice of girlfriends.
However, I've recently had my beliefs thrown into question.
As a maker of electronic music, I was sent an invitation to enter my music into a competition - but closer inspection revealed the competion was not open to white people (like myself) - only African, Chinese, South American etc.
To me this is an afront to what music is about, especially electronic stuff which is universal, and often faceless.
Techno happened because of black and white (and gay & straight) musical ideas coming together. Black producers got into Kraftwerk etc...and since then there has been a continual multi-cultural exchange.
There are UK-based Drum + Bass musicians that are Chinese (Nookie)and Japanese(Seiji) not to mention those all those all over the world. e.g Brazil has a massive Drum & Bass scene
I don't understand why the organisers of this competition feel minorities are under-represented enough to exclude white people from it,in their own country.

Listen to me, now I am saying things like "..in my own country..." this treatment has caused me to become defensive and feel excluded...it is fuelling the fires of racism.
Multi-culturalism INCLUDES white people. Sorry to rant but this issue has made me rather angry!...Acid love and Techno respect to everyone, Rich x...Jah Bless!

i think some of the questions are not really asking for your racism but for social-racism: Statistically caucasians are better in school than for example afro americans but thats not because of "racial"inferiority but of the place society gave them: it's statistically more hard to get a good education if you are afro american O.o

i would have guessed that i end up with maybe 30 % but it turned out to be 64 % and i dont have an idea how that can be O.o maybe i misunderstood the answers

im kind of shocked!

edit: i dont get it :( i must misinterpret some answers or they must be counted strangely O.o i've been known to be against racism (since im half german half polish) and i don't think i am

well whatever it's just a test

The tricky part about the sports question is that it makes a big difference whether you are just considering the US population (which this test is obviously aimed at) or the entire world. Blacks in the US who are descended from slaves have a genetic predisposition to great physical strength, size, and endurance because the slaves were bred for those qualities, as well as a handicap in the intellect area because slaves who were smarter than their owners tended to get killed for it. Blacks from other areas of the world do not share those artificial pressures and are more a result of their natural environment than the jacka$$es populating it.

In any event, I got a 10 and 3% racist points...

...sounds about right, seeing as I believe all of humanity deserves to burn equally.

To be smarter than a superior is often a problem in other groups such as mine.
And yes, mine tried, and almost killed me. :(
But some superiors are not necessarily smart themselves, only see the smarts in other people and use them.
Some people under undue pressure (discrimination, hatred, jealousy) have a tendency to develop an unusual skill of camouflaging their true feelings and intelligence. There are many ways for an intelligent employee to outsmart his employer and outlive him, too. So although you have a point, I'm not sure that selection disfavored the intellgent one over hot blooded ones. I do see why some people would think that way; and I wouldn't be surprised there aren't any studies proving it.

Feeding US citizens with 3,000 Cal/day to raise tall, strong sodiers for combat with the Soviets was US's nutritional policy at one point, too, whites weren't especially disadvantaged physically / genetically in comparison.

Of course they meant those of Indian origin.I think in addition to Indians, there are blacks who get separated from their tradition clan/tribal communities and living in the cities are also classified as colored. They have no particular racial ties, speaking English as mother tongue, and culturally Westerners. Now the colored blacks are reverse discriminated by the genuine Blacks as Whites, or even more so. In their case appearance is only deceptive to a non South Afrikaner.

Don't worry andorin: the test was written by an individual who has 'some' interest in racial matters, but anyone could have written a test of similar content with a totally different evaluation (grading) of responses.

To be exact, this test is heavily flawed and shallow; take it as a test intended for humor only. But there is more fun if we 'pretend' to take it seriously, in which case, we're just playing along.

One attempt to reclassify 'racism' on a more abstract idea of Ethnicity Awareness Scale (http://www.wa-pedia.com/forum/showpost.php?p=205229&postcount=9). Unfortunately it doesn't come with a test. Would you like to write an improved test given your negative experience with this one ?

I guess I'm 9% racist. I think because I think things like affirmative action are racist because it's treating people of different races differently. If we're all equal, we should be treated the same way right?

lexico
Sep 19, 2005, 17:49
I totally agree with you on the vicissitudes of Affirmative Action, and I might add a point from the viewpoint of African Americans. I have seen plenty of bright, hard working AA students fail due to lack of follow-up support; but also due to the hypocricy that admission to a prestigious school/job makes up for the centuries of exploitation-discrimination against "colored" people for example.

The great hypocricy works like this: give them accesss, perhaps beyond their means, and let them fail miserably for lack of 1) aptitude 2) social network 3) adequate, continuing support. Either revamp te whole AA plan, or scrap it and admit the US is racist from deep down below. I won't even go into how some whites abused the system by declaring their heritage as colored when in all practicality they were white.

The sins (forgive my strong wording; cannot find a better word, and, as the US is in the majority Christian) of white supremacy of the past is not going to leave unless GENUINE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION is taken, not the lying Affirmative Action that only looks good on paper. Active rehabilitation of the descenents of the colored people of the unindentured servitude of US's past is not an option, but one requirement without which the future of US is at stake in my 3rd party opinion. I also believe it needs to be done with respect and dignity, not without. I apologise for deviating from your point, Brooker, but please take it as supplmenting yours. It's just that I've been thinking about this for a long time, and there seems to be no way out. :(

When it comes to things like education, I don't think there's any genetic difference between races, but I do think there are cultural differences - things that you pick up from your parents, expectations and values. I think people from different cultures tend to value education differently.

For example, the high school I went to was mainly made up of three thirds, Whites, Asians, and African Americans. I observed that the parents of the Whites and Asians strongly encouraged their children to excel in things like Math, English, and the Arts. The African American students were encouraged to excel in things like sports with less of an emphasis on excelling in academics. Not only was academics not encouraged in the African Americans, but the African American students who were good at those subjects kind of tried to hide it from their friends and peers for fear of being ostracized by the group. That's not really an atmosphere that encourages learning.

So I think these educational difficulties don't always come from external sources, but often times from within the group itself.

Yes, that is another result of an evolutionary pressure against high intelligence--however the abillity to sucessfully pull of such a deception inherantly requires an abnormally high degree of intelligence, so few people can actually do it.

In general, when it becomes undesireable to be intelligent, people start becoming stupid--witness the current state of my country, for instance.

Feeding US citizens with 3,000 Cal/day to raise tall, strong sodiers for combat with the Soviets was US's nutritional policy at one point, too, whites weren't especially disadvantaged physically / genetically in comparison.

I hadn't heard of this--and I find it improbable considering that one of the distinctions between the former Soviet Union and the US is that the US government has never posessed the broad degree of control over it's citizens necescary to dictate their diet...

...it would explain the high incidence of obesity though. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ReikuHiteruo/Emoticons/LolLolLolLol.gif

I wonder how you arrived at your pessimistic conclusion.
Couldn't we equally say, they all deserve a second chance ?

Age and experience, my friend--age and experience.

As for second chances--those have no place in life.

To indulge failure it to allow it to fail again--if something does not work, it must be destroyed so that something else may succeed in it's place.

Please forgive my overly pragmatic view--but I have found such ruthlessness to be the necessary truth of survival. Fortunately most people are able to live their lives with their vulnerabilities intact, and never have to face such cruel realities.

Yeah, I hope I'm not race-minded. I read Cornell West's Race Matters and then wanted to throttle him after I read Beverly Tatum's "Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" and some of the writings of Booker T. Washington.

Anywho... The test was definitely slanted itself. But then again, it's not like it was a New York Times poll. Questions were obviously slanted to make more conservative people look racist, but I managed to dodge the pitfalls and stay honest.

"Which do you prefer, Mexican Immigrants, or European Immigrants?" I picked "neither" because Mexican immigrants I have no problem with. It's illegal immigrants (including Mexicans) that are pissing me off.

I do not agree with the term 'race', or 'color'. Is there is such a thing as race, it is the human race.

All humans have one thing incommon: sentience. That is enough to see people as equals.

Awsome.

Its quite simple that apart from the very specific yet insugnificant hollow genetic coding for skin colour, were all the same bag of deoxyribonucleaic acid.

DNA for short.

I find most "Racial" differences are infact quite comfortably actually under "Cultural" differences, a white man born into a asian country will have more in common with that country then the west.

Same for Blacks, I find it hard to emagine they would entirely fit in in the heart of Africa.

Though its interesting to note people tend to be statistically drawn to their own skin colour, but, then again, this is because society has been telling them for hundreds of years they are different and so they feel drawn and accepted into that racial group, but, as with the white teenagers across the world getting "Gansta!" along with the black originators, they relate to each other more inside this "ghetto rap and hip hop" type of subculture more then whites or blacks outside it.

Humans just have a tendency, maybe even a need, to have an "us" and a "them".

While it may or may not be "whites" that keep others down,
there certainly is a system that was designed by "whites" (rich white males)
to keep them in power and their system intact i.e. all others under their system by their definition of it as universal, enforcable by violence. Not only internal to the US, but also externally. i do not place "commonism" as opposite to this. nor do i call this system "democracy". nor define it as either.

Why do America's First Nations not have full status at the UN?

No, Charlize Theron is not African American. But, her language group is first Afrikaner (Germanic group, sister langauge of Dutch language). Afrikaner is meaning the Dutch of Africa. I looked at this thread the other day and started the quiz in another window. I found it to be simplistic and silly. The questions were couched in very vague terms. Some of them anyway. Dumb, really. I didn't register for the site, I wouldn't give my email, even an email address used for 'junk' registrations to this site, so I didn't get a score. I didn't continue on the thread till today when I read to the bottom of the first page. some interesting contributions there alright.

I would be DEEPLY sceptical of anyone who says something like 'I'm not racist'. I really would.

I think it was Hal on page one, 24th post or thereabouts made a good point which I've wondered about for years and years. How come European Americans are never called ... European Americans?

And also, who decides which is a colour of a 'coloured' person?!!! lol. Reminds me of the time I tried to explain the rules of snooker to my wife.
"first you pot a red, then a colour, then a red, then a colour. Till all the reds are gone, then the colours in the correct sequence." So she said something like " a red, then a red, then a red...." and I said, "no, a red, then a colour, then a red.Alternating till all the reds are gone".

So, I skipped to the last page to post this and there was only one post.Apologies if I've rehashed old ideas.
"But red isa colour" was her reply! Which I thought was good!

What is the point? we are all brothers and sisters, why hate each other? I maybe also a bit racist i like more asian women than european and american girls:p not everyone is the same but racisme doesn't help here in Belgium im even ben accussed for chinese while im filipino and also im beeing accused from fake asian because im more white then brown or like all my japanese girlfriends here in antwerp and in bruxelles are been shout out by chinese girls they call my gfriends h**krz and geisha's because 2 of them are gothics and they paint they skin white.

Im not racist i like people i respect them and thats why everyone with who i hang with likes me it doesn't matter to me from where you come, if your just polite and a good person then i respect you. On the contrary i even have a friend from Congo(but he is also half belgian so he is a mulat) he likes more japan then his own country and he have the same ideas like i do and that's why he is my bestfriend. you see it doesn't matter who or what you are if you just be cool to people then there won't be hatred.

Well, this test was a bit weird. Many questions about US stuff than I didn't understand. What's NAACP ? Who is Jesse Jackson ? Mexican immigrants in the USA are a good thing I suppose. Look at Salma Hayek, Jessica Alba and Eva Longoria ! Hot !!

I was also confused about their meaning of race in questions like "Your race is more attractive to you than others". If I find Italian girls attractive and I am not Italian but Northern European, is that another race ? I think so as they look different enough, so I answered no. However I am not attracted to black people.

I believe that this test is incorrect. For example, I think it is classifying my view that some races are better at sport or education than others as rascist. It has been proven that some races automatically have a head start at certain things. I can't remember who, but a country that is very very good at running is fully black. Therefore, this test is classifying me as rascist, theoretically to my own race...

These tests are never that good...

I got 21... but I do agree like many others, that this test is limited mainly to Americans. Not only that but, we are not all equal. Some races do things better or worse depending on the environment in which they were raised. Also, size matters and appearance doesn't, in my opinion. If you have long legs and you are thin and have the proper muscles, such is the case in some cultures, then you may be better at running... as the example was given above; someone said they new of a country in Africa which has very fast people.

Hm. I'm racist. No **** sherlock. I'm a white girl who grew up in the ghetto. I don't like my own people that much. And while I hate to say it, I haven't met a young Spanish person who's personality changes my views on their youth I gathered from boarding school.

Don't lynch me please.

You are generally NOT race-minded, there may be a thing or two that you see as a race issue, but mostly, you are a very tolerant person!

Congratulations, you are a very tolerant and muticultered person! No one could ever accuse you of being a racist!

As expected, experienced-based scepticism must never be confused with blind racism.

You scored 18% on racistpoints, higher than 12% of your peers. >> I think I'm probably a lot more racist then this says I am... I probably should be around 30% IMO.

How can you be 1% racist. That is ridiculuous.
Does it mean that once every hundred days (say three times a year) you become suddenly intolerant of 'lesser races'
I think that this quiz is dangerous and overly PC and hides the deeper issues.
For instance, can races be compared fairly? Considering that all races are from different countries, and therefore have access to different enviroments, in my opinion, any conculsion reached would not be part of a fair test.
And the whole immigration questions. If you hate immigration are you a racist? Is it a matter of race? Why can't it be attached to the social and economic strain that immigrants can sometimes cause or perhaps other reasons

Well I got 13%. But for me race is not a term that should be used at all. There exists no biological races in humans as it is in animals. There are more gentetic variance within what is considered races (blacks, whites and so on) then between them. There is abosluty no biological or genetic classification of humans that is in anyway valid.

The used of ethnic groups are however useful, that term focuses on common cultur, history, religion, value system and so on. It also states that any classification of humans is a social construct at is base, like nationalities and so on.

At 16% I'm an anti-racist whose more racist than 6% of my peers!

A fun test but can't really be very accurate..

Just some thoughts on the questions:

Why should schools care about how minorities in general do in tests? It is up to the people themselves how much they study and the study help counselors are open for everyone!

I have about as much thoughts about Mexican immigrants in the US as an average American might have about boat refugees in Finland..

Didn't have a clue what NAACP was, looked it up and thought that there should not be a need for something like that to exist..

Jesse who?

None of the black people I know seems to be into rap. I know many people who enjoy rap music and even a couple of people who make it themselves but all of them are white!

You're clearly a thick fellow. Islam being a religion, its followers -muslims- are not a race. I suggest you spend more time educating yourself before you spew such nonsense.
