Description: Howl's Moving Castle (ハウルの動く城, Hauru no Ugoku Shiro?) is a 2004 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli and based on Diana Wynne Jones' novel of the same name. Mamoru Hosoda, director of one season and two movies from the Digimon series, was originally selected to direct but abruptly left the project, leaving the then-retired Miyazaki to take up the director's role.

A love story between an 18-year-old girl named Sofî, cursed by a witch into an old woman's body, and a magician named Hauru. Under the curse, Sofî sets out to seek her fortune, which takes her to Hauru's strange moving castle. In the castle, Sophie meets Hauru's fire demon, named Karishifâ. Seeing that she is under a curse, the demon makes a deal with Sophie--if she breaks the contract he is under with Hauru, then Karushifâ will lift the curse that Sophie is under, and she will return to her 18-year-old shape.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Female protagonist; Some scenes very emotional; Beautiful scenery
Cons: none

My second most favorite of Miyazaki's films next to Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. This film was nominated for an Oscar.

Even though it was my second favorite there was a scene that made me burst into tears. It came upon me so sudden that it shocked me for a moment. The emotion came upon me so sudden it seemed like it bypassed my ability to control myself.

Hauru no ugoku shiro moved me because Sophie viewed herself as "unwanted-able". She believed it so much that she walked off supposing that no one will notice anyway or care enough to go after her. The fact that she was cursed to be old was a "relief" to her because it reflected how she felt about herself anyway. It also gave her an excuse to go away. Nevertheless she fell in love with Howl and did everything she could to save him...which she did. Her becoming old had to do with how she felt about herself. The Witch of the Waste did nothing to but made her outward appearance reflect how she felt about herself. The curse was rendered useless anytime she allowed love to guide her words and actions.
