My second most favorite of Miyazaki's films next to Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. This film was nominated for an Oscar.
Even though it was my second favorite there was a scene that made me burst into tears. It came upon me so sudden that it shocked me for a moment. The emotion came upon me so sudden it seemed like it bypassed my ability to control myself.
Hauru no ugoku shiro moved me because Sophie viewed herself as "unwanted-able". She believed it so much that she walked off supposing that no one will notice anyway or care enough to go after her. The fact that she was cursed to be old was a "relief" to her because it reflected how she felt about herself anyway. It also gave her an excuse to go away. Nevertheless she fell in love with Howl and did everything she could to save him...which she did. Her becoming old had to do with how she felt about herself. The Witch of the Waste did nothing to but made her outward appearance reflect how she felt about herself. The curse was rendered useless anytime she allowed love to guide her words and actions.

My favorite of all Miyazaki's films. No wonder it won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. I love all the gods representing different aspects of nature. I love the colors and the magic. But most of all I love that this little girl who was so self-centered and spoiled turned into a beautiful, mature person because her love made her courageous, smart and willing to sacrifice herself for those she loved. The music and scenery was gorgeous. In most of Miyazaki's films, especially this one, there is a moment when everything pauses and the character meditates or contemplates or just think. In this case it was on the train. It was the most beautiful moment in the film. The second being when Chihiro and Lin sit out eating and looking at the water that covers the train tracks and the entire area where the Bathhouse sits. The moonlight and the music and the "pause" where they enjoyed the beauty in silence. Her love for Haku, her parents and eventually, everyone including the Yuaba changed everything. She returned to her parents and "real life" a changed person.

I like the fact that there are no villains in this film in the sense of a person or group who personifies the "evil side" and one person or group who personifies the "good side". Everyone has a "non-good" or "non-evil" reason for what they do.
This movie is definitely not for children. Some scenes are disturbing.

This is a marvelous film because the Protagonist is a scientist, smart, skillful, brave and sacrificial. Nausicaa is most definitely a heroin that ends up being the mythological "man" in blue as legend predicted. "Yupa is searching for the mythological man in blue who, according to the legend, will appear surrounded by a sea of gold and reunite the people and nature."

I like that Porco was a "James Bond" type...smooth and confident. No doubt this is what Gina loved about him. I wonder about the curse though. It is obvious that he feels guilty concerning his friend Bellini's death as well as the death's of the rest of the Seaplane pilots. Maybe it was that he gave up that he feels he did not do his duty to try to save his friends or maybe he feels guilty that he did not die with them. He probably asks himself "Since he gave up why did he survive when the rest did not give up and died?"

Story had more potential than this. It seemed like Miyazaki lost interest and wanted an ending...any ending. Haru's development to a maturer girl needed more "development". Nevertheless, I like the notion that if you do not know yourself or only find your identity through what others believe or say about you then you can lose yourself and become what the others want you to be.
Oh yeah Muta was hilarious.

I have never met a Japanese woman but online. But every mature piece of literature or movie tells that Japanese women are frustratingly secretive. It is not cute. This movie captures that as well. Nevertheless, the events (Moon, Baron, Seji, Grandfather) in her life leads her to the truth about herself and to face herself so that the end result is her being honest with herself and Seji. I love the movie.

Well written and complex story with good villains. As with most of Miyazaki's movies the female protagonist has to realize that love will bring about courage and inspiration to overcome difficulties.

I loved how Miyazaki paralleled Kiki's powers with her confidence and courage. Once she lost those she lost her powers. In order to gain them back she must go through the difficulties with hope.

This is one of the most heart-warming movies I have ever seen. It is perfect for children, especially little girls. I recommended this for a co-worker who has two girls around Satsuki's age. They loved it so much they wanted to see it every night.
