All Nippon Airways, one of the two national Japanese airlines, has launched the first flights with some WC reserved for female passengers. The decision was taken after a survey among Japanese customers revealed that single-sex toilets were the second most important consideration of Japanese women in choosing a airline, after the quality of desserts.

One toilet in each of the three classes (economy, business, first) has been marked "women only" on ANA long-distance flights since 1st march 2010.

ANA say that cleanliness is not the main issue that women have with sharing a toilet with men. They claim that many women feel uncomfortable using the lavatory for a long time knowing that a man is waiting behind the door.
