The Mitsubishi Zaibatsu 三菱財閥

Iwasaki Yataro, founder of Mitsubishi

The founder of Mitsubishi was a man named Iwasaki Yataro (1835-1885). Originally from Kochi in Shikoku, he launched a shipping firm called Tsukumo Shokaiin 1870, just two years after the Meiji Restoration.

Three years later, the company was renamed Mitsubishi Shokai. The company grew fast and diversified its activities into a broad range of manufacturing and commerce. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding was established in 1917, Mitsubishi Electric in 1921 and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1934.

Mitsubishi, along with other zaibatsu, helped financing the military government of the 1920's and 30's. Due to the commensurable funding of the Minseito Party by Mitsubishi, the 1929-30 cabinet was renamed the "Mitsubishi cabinet" by the Seiyukai opposition party (which 1927-29 cabinet had previously been labeled the "Mitsui cabinet" by the Minseito).

Mitsubishi built military equipment during the war - including the notorious Mitsubishi Zero Fighters.

Although the main company was dissolved by the Americans in 1946 and subsidiaries are now officially independent companies, the Mitsubishi group organised around the (Tokyo-)Mitsubishi Bank remain a powerful financial combine.
